There are active ingredients that need to be protected from stomach acids (pH 1-4). They should therefore not be released before reaching the small intestine (pH 5-7).
This may be due to the sensitivity of the active ingredient to the acidic environment in the stomach. The therapeutic effect can be reduced or neutralised by the acid. Some active ingredients should only be released in the small intestine in order to achieve better adsorption or to develop their effect there, e.g. intestinal antiseptics. In addition, some active ingredients (e.g. iron) can cause gastric mucosal irritation and therefore require enteric-coated protection to prevent irritation.

The ready-to-use AquaPolish® E film coating system consists of the pH-controlled methacrylic acid/ethyl acrylate copolymer, which provides gastro-resistant protection. It also protects the active ingredients from environmental influences such as UV light, oxidation and moisture. The polymer is not authorised for use in food and nutraceutical products.

BonuLac® E is a natural ready-to-use shellac-based film coating system that provides a protective film with moisture-repellent and gastro-resistant properties. With its taste-masking function, BonuLac® E neutralises unpleasant tastes and odours of natural extracts, oils and other substances. Although shellac is a natural product, it does not comply with all clean label trends as it is not vegan.

It is a ready-to-use, water-soluble film coating system for oral dosage forms in the food supplement industry. It also provides a protective film with enteric properties and gives the surface of oral dosage forms a slight gloss effect. Thanks to the use of natural alginates, it can be declared vegan.
