What is film coating?
Film coating refers to the application of a thin polymer film to a tablet core – also known as a film coating. It protects the active ingredient tablet from environmental influences such as moisture or UV light and gives the tablet core more stability. The film coating also controls the release of the active ingredient. From immediate release (fast-dissolving) to delayed release (retarding) to enteric-coated protection. Odor and taste masking is also possible.
Film-coated tablets make it easier for patients to swallow and feel pleasant in the mouth. And with a colored film, they make it easy to identify or differentiate which tablet they are. The aesthetics of a film-coated tablet also play a major role both in marketing and for patients.
